Door style is the biggest driver of how a kitchen looks. Here's what each of the common profiles actually looks like.

Shaker isn't just one look

"Shaker" covers a range of proportions, not one fixed design. Rails and stiles can be narrow (~2") for a lighter, contemporary look, or wide (2.5"+) for a more traditional look. Some shaker doors also use a very slightly recessed center panel rather than a perfectly flat one. None of this is a separate catalog category, so two "shaker" cabinets from different retailers can look noticeably different side by side.

Flat-panel vs. raised-panel, in photos

These two get confused constantly in listing photos. The tell is the center panel: flat-panel is one flat plane with no change in elevation. Raised-panel has a center panel that sits higher than the surrounding frame, creating a visible shadow line where the two meet — especially in the corners.

Shaker is the default for a reason

Shaker is the most widely stocked style across retailers, so it's usually the easiest to comparison shop, and its ubiquity tends to make it cheaper on average than more labor-intensive profiles like raised-panel or arch. White and gray are its two most common finishes — compare white shaker or gray shaker cabinets directly.
